Abstract: The Petri Net-based synchronization models impose strict synchronization requirements among multimedia objects. This may introduce unecessary delays, and may increase the presentation time. In this paper, we propose a hybrid model that uses a Petri Net-based model to describe strict synchronization requirements among multimedia components, and a lower-level mechanism to describe weak synchronization requirements, in the case that strict synchronization is not necessary. Skipping of objects which arrive late, is modeled. The model supports both inter- and intra-stream synchronization, it is simple to use, and may reduce the delays, and also, the size of the buffers needed to handle slow streams.
