Description: Abstract The interdiffusion phenomena in the solid solution α of the Al-Ag system are examined in the temperature range 648–793 K using a molten NaCl-KCl-LiCl electrolyte. The interdiffusion coefficients D are measured by use of transient techniques such as chronopotentiometry and chronoamperometry taking into account the perturbations due to the variations of the activity coefficients and the movement of the electrode/electrolyte interface. The imposed pulses are anodic as well as cathodic under galvanostatic and potentiostatic conditions. The evolution of the surface composition back to the equilibrium situation after the end of the electrolysis is also examined. The ratio between the diffusion coefficient Dc deduced from classical laws and that calculated taking into account the influence of the electrode boundary motion, D is Dc/D = 1.3 on an average value. The evolution of the interdiffusion coefficients is determined to be of the following forms as a function of the composition x (0 < xA1 < 0.2, xA1: mole fraction of aluminium): Moreover the evolution of the interdiffusion coefficients as a function of the temperature obeys the following equation: with D∞ = 16.3 × 10−1 cm−2 s−1 and ΔH = 153 kJ mol−1 for x = 0.15.
