Abstract: Conventional orthorectification software cannot handlesurface occlusions and image visibility. The approachpresented here synthesizes related work in photogrammetryand computer graphics/vision to automatically produceorthographic and perspective views based on fully 3Dsurface data (supplied by laser scanning). Surface occlusionsin the direction of projection are detected to create thedepth map of the new image. This information allowsidentifying, by visibility checking through back-projection ofsurface triangles, all source images which are entitled tocontribute color to each pixel of the novel image. Weightedtexture blending allows regulating the local radiometriccontribution of each source image involved, while outlyingcolor values are automatically discarded with a basicstatistical test. Experimental results from a close-rangeproject indicate that this fusion of laser scanning with multiviewphotogrammetry could indeed combine geometricaccuracy with high visual quality and speed. A discussion ofintended improvements of the algorithm is also included.
