Table of contents: The inaccuracy of the analyt ical determinations can be checked with the collaboration between the laboratory and an external independent institution. The whole procedure is called external quality control or proficiency testing and its purpose is the estimation of the distance betwee n the laboratory’s values and a common accepted target value. This distance is accepted if it is between certain limits. The external institution computes the target value and its limits of variance. These computations are usually based on statistical an alyses which purpose is the elimination of the outlier values. Before the statistical analysis the laboratories are grouped according their analyzer model and their analytical method. These groups are called peer groups. For each peer group a different tar get value is estimated. The distance between the laboratory’s values and the target value is called “Standard Deviation Index” (SDI). The accuracy is perfect when SDI = 0.
